Lecture Title: The Application of Nanostructured Semiconductors in Thermoelectricity and Energy Storage

Abstract

Nanostructured seminconductors with low bandgap is promising for thermoelectric applications. Various efforts have been reported to show the improvement of figure of merit to be 2.6 at certain temperature range. Our group, the other hand, try to work on flexible structured thermoelectric materials in order to be able to fabricate modules with complex geometry to fit into various shaped heat sources. Mostly, we investiaged carbon based materials and evaluate their thermoelectric properties and possible improvements.

We will also present our recent activities on synthesis of nanostructured electrdoe materials for Na/Li ion storage applications. We carried out works on V2O5, Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP), black phosphorus (BP), and sulfides by various preparation process. They show high cycling stability and good rate capability, which is suitable for high power and fast charging applications. From materials design point of view, we aim to increase the specific capacity, volumetric capacity, 1st-cycle Coulumbic efficiency, cycling life and rate performance. Many of these materials show high cycling stability and good rate capability, which is suitable for high power and fast charging applications.

Biography

Qingyu Yan is currently an associate professor in School of Materials Science and Engineering in Nanyang Technology University. He obtained his BS in Materials Science and Engineering, Nanjing University. He finished his PhD from Materials Science and Engineering Department of State University of New York at Stony Brook. After that, He joined the Materials Science and Engineering Department of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as a postdoctoral research associate. He joined School of Materials Science and Engineering of Nanyang Technological University as an assistant professor in early 2008 and became an associate Professor in 2013. Yan’s research efforts have been mainly devoted to two areas: (1) advanced electrode materials for energy storage devices; (2) high-efficiency thermoelectric semiconductor.
